Three police personnel were beaten, and a police vehicle was vandalised during a march by activists of the banned Chhatra League and the Jubo League, whose political activities remain banned, in Gopalganj Sadar upazila today (24 October).
The incident took place around noon in the Kheyaghat area of Raghunathpur union, said Gopalganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Habibullah.
The injured police personnel were identified as Sub-Inspector Fulmia and constables Shawkat and Jasim of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station.
Speaking to The Business Standard this afternoon, the SP said a police patrol team had travelled from the town towards a village and was resting by the roadside on its way back. The driver was inside the vehicle, while three police personnel were standing outside.
At that time, activists of the banned Chhatra League and the Jubo League arrived in a procession and attacked the vehicle, he said.
“When the driver drove away, two police personnel were struck several times with sticks. But they were not seriously injured,” the SP said.
He further said that several people had been detained in connection with the incident.
“Several people have been detained. We are verifying their involvement, and legal action will be taken against anyone found to be involved in the incident. We are also in the process of filing a case,” the SP added.
Meanwhile, a 1-minute-and-50-second video that surfaced on social media shows a group of young men marching towards an intersection while chanting “Joy Bangla” and “Sheikh Hasina will return, Bangladesh will smile”. Some of them were seen carrying hockey sticks, pieces of split wood, and other sticks.
The video also shows a police vehicle parked near the intersection, with the driver inside and three police personnel standing nearby. One of the officers appears to be talking on a phone.
As the footage continues, the group begins vandalising the vehicle while the driver is still inside. When the driver moves the vehicle forward, some marchers chase it and continue attacking it. One police officer appears to try to stop them.
The footage then shows several marchers beating the police personnel after the vehicle moves away. While a few people appear to try to stop the attackers, others continue assaulting the officers. The police personnel eventually run towards the vehicle and leave the scene.
