Police seek 7-day remand of actor Don in Salman Shah murder case

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed a plea seeking a seven-day remand of actor Ashraful Haque Don in a case filed over the murder of popular movie superstar Salman Shah.

Confirming the matter to BSS, Sub-Inspector (SI) Shah Alam of the general registration wing of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court said CID Inspector Mojibur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, filed the plea on Sunday with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana.

The court fixed 27 August for a hearing on the plea in the presence of the accused.

The CID cited three grounds for seeking Don’s remand:

• The case has attracted widespread public attention and involves popular actor Salman Shah. His mother has been demanding an impartial investigation since 1996 and has continued to press for a fair probe through newspapers and social media. The CID said questioning Don in custody could help uncover the circumstances surrounding the murder.
• The CID described Don as “highly calculated and cunning” and said intensive questioning could help identify and arrest other alleged accomplices. It added that remand is necessary for a thorough investigation and to uncover the truth behind the case.
• Despite a travel ban, Don allegedly attempted to leave the country through various means. The CID said questioning him could help establish why he was trying to flee abroad, who may have influenced him, and other information relevant to the investigation.

Don was arrested by immigration police on August 9 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and was later handed over to the CID. He was subsequently sent to jail.

Salman Shah’s maternal uncle, Mohammad Alamgir, popularly known as Alamgir Kumkum, filed the case against 11 people, including Salman’s wife, Samira Haque, with Ramna Police Station in the capital on October 21, 2025, under Sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code.

The other accused are Aziz Mohammad Bhai, Samira’s mother Latifa Haque Lusi, Don, David, Zaved, Faruk, Ruby, A Sattar, Saju and Rijvi Ahmed Farhad.

Earlier, on 20 October 2025, Dhaka’s Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Jannatul Ferdous Ibn Haque ordered the officer-in-charge (OC) of Ramna Police Station to treat the case filed over the death of Chowdhury Mohammad Shahriar (Emon), popularly known as Salman Shah, as a murder case and submit a report in this regard.

In its order, the court said the unnatural death case was hereby cancelled and revoked by an order passed on 31 October 2021.
