Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today (13 June) inaugurated the newly formed Matamuhuri upazila, its accompanying police station and laid the foundation stone of Pekua municipality during a day-long visit to Cox’s Bazar.
He unveiled the foundation stone of the municipality at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Upokulio College in Pekua upazila before inaugurating the new upazila and police station.
Tarique was accompanied by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shah Alam, lawmakers and senior government officials.
Prayers and munajat were offered following the inauguration ceremonies.
Addressing the programme in Pekua, Tarique said former prime minister Khaleda Zia had laid the foundation stone of Pekua upazila 25 years ago, while the current government had now initiated the development of Pekua municipality.
“The BNP remains committed to the welfare of the people whether it is in power or outside power,” he said. “The BNP’s main focus is the interest of the country and its people. That is our sole objective and commitment.”
The government published the final gazette declaring Pekua Sadar union as Pekua municipality on 17 May this year.

Later in the day, Tarique inaugurated Matamuhuri upazila and Matamuhuri Police Station, both established as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen local administration and public services in the region.
According to official sources, the formation of Matamuhuri upazila was approved at the 120th meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation on 7 May.
The government declared Matamuhuri an upazila in fulfilment of an election pledge made by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed ahead of the national election.
The new upazila has been formed with seven unions in the southern part of Chakaria upazila – Badarkhali, Purbabarabheola, Paschimbarabheola, Saharbil, Bheolamanikchar, Demusia and Konakhali.
Located on the banks of the Matamuhuri River, the upazila spans 143.8 square kilometres.
