Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said people of Bangladesh do not want Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in power, claiming that public sentiment remains firmly against the party.
“Jamaat-e-Islami opposed the independence, killed freedom fighters, and dishonoured mothers and sisters. That is why people of this country do not want them in power and will never bring them to power,” he said.
Fakhrul, also the BNP Secretary General, made the remarks today (20 May) while speaking at a reception after inspecting progress on the reopening work of the abandoned Thakurgaon Airport.
He said the BNP is not against reforms and has played a role in implementing the “July Charter”. He also alleged that some political groups are spreading misinformation in the name of religion for political gain, stressing that politics must be based on truth and integrity.
Fakhrul further said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the country is moving in a new political direction, with the government working to fulfil its pre-election commitments.
Referring to the airport project, he said it is expected to be made operational within two years, calling it a source of regional pride. He added that approval for Thakurgaon University has been granted and a vice-chancellor appointed, while the medical college has also received approval, with admissions set to begin next year.
He urged local investors to expand investment, saying job creation is now more important than degrees alone: “Become entrepreneurs and create employment.”
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam and State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat also spoke, saying necessary steps will be taken to reopen the airport within two years.
Thakurgaon-2 MP Abdus Salam, Thakurgaon-3 MP Zahidul Islam, district BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Paigam Ali, and Thakurgaon University Vice Chancellor Md Israfil were present.
