More than 50 garment factories in Gazipur have announced holidays today (4 November) ranging from one to three days amid continuing RMG workers’ protest, while a worker injured during a clash linked to the protests has died in hospital.
The factory closures come amid ongoing demonstrations demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000 and growing concerns over instability in the industrial belt.
The deceased, Toufiq Hossain, 35, died around 8am yesterday (3 November) at Shin Shin Japan Hospital in Uttara, where he had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Amzad Hossain confirmed the death.
According to his relatives, Toufiq had been living in Banglabazar and working in the garment sector for around five years.
On Monday, he was trying to record an attack on a workers’ protest on his mobile phone in front of Territory Garments, a factory owned by Noman Group, when the attackers turned on him and beat him, leaving him critically injured.
Fellow workers rescued him and took him to hospital, where he died the following morning.
However, Mohammad Belayet Hossain, additional commissioner (Crime and Operations) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), said outsiders had gone to a factory and pressured its management to shut it down, reports Prothom Alo.
When the management refused, a clash broke out between the outsiders and factory workers, leaving one worker critically injured. He later died, the police official said, adding that no police personnel were present at the scene during the incident.
