Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has alleged that the opposition is involved in a new conspiracy to destroy democracy, claiming its activities resemble those of the group that fled the country on 5 August.
Anee, also a BNP joint secretary general, alleged that the opposition’s actions, including what he described as abusive language and threats of violence, could not be considered part of democratic practice.
He made the remarks on today (25 September) morning while speaking at a discussion following the inauguration of riverbank protection work along a Wapda canal in Bhabaniganj Union of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila.
Anee alleged that the opposition’s actions, including what he described as abusive language and threats of violence, could not be considered part of democratic practice.
“They are involved in a new conspiracy to destroy democracy. They themselves are saying that bomb and cocktail attacks will not stop if the 11-party alliance’s demands are not met,” he said.
He also alleged similarities between the opposition’s activities and those of the group that fled on 5 August, referring to incidents involving arson, crude bomb attacks and flash processions.
“There is a deep conspiracy against the country, democracy and Tarique Rahman’s government,” he said.
Anee warned that the BNP would confront what he called “conspirators” on the streets, saying his party had emerged from street movements and had previously faced political opponents through such movements.
He further alleged that opposition leaders speak differently inside and outside parliament, claiming that their public statements often use language that is “indecent” and “against political etiquette”.
The minister said those who had fled on 5 August had previously formed alliances with groups he described as fascist and alleged that the opposition would not allow the government to remain peaceful over the next five years.
