Opposition Leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has congratulated BNP-nominated candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on being elected the country’s 23rd president.
“Today, 20 August 2026, the 23rd presidential election of Bangladesh was held. I sincerely congratulate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on being elected the 23rd president,” Shafiqur Rahman wrote in a Facebook post today (20 August).
He expressed hope that the newly elected president would use his “highest competence and wisdom” to establish justice, uphold democracy, and protect the country’s independence and sovereignty as the guardian of the state.
The Jamaat ameer also wished Mirza Fakhrul good health and long life.
Earlier in the afternoon, Mirza Fakhrul was elected president through a contested vote, marking the country’s first competitive presidential election in 35 years.
