A newly installed AI-powered traffic camera has been stolen from a road in Dhaka, triggering widespread reactions on social media after a video surfaced on social media.
The incident sparked humorous and critical reactions online, with many users pointing out the irony of a law-enforcement surveillance device being stolen in public view.
Ziaur Rahman Ziko, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Gulshan Traffic Division, said, “It came to our knowledge that a part of an AI camera was stolen by unidentified individuals from the 300 Feet Road in the elevated expressway area.”
“We are trying to nab the offenders,” he added.
The artificial intelligence-based traffic surveillance system installed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police is already operational at several major intersections.
The system, which uses AI-enabled cameras to detect traffic violations and automatically generate cases, is meant to automate policing and bring order to the capital’s chaotic roads.
According to officials, AI-equipped cameras have been installed at the Hotel InterContinental intersection in Shahbagh, Banglamotor, Karwan Bazar, Bijoy Sarani and Jahangir Gate. Installation work is also underway at Farmgate.
The traffic division plans to expand the system to at least 500 important signals and intersections across the capital within the next six months.
