The Ambassador of the Netherlands to Bangladesh, Joris van Bommel, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister’s Defence Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam yesterday.
During the meeting held at the Armed Forces Division headquarters in Dhaka Cantonment, the two sides exchanged views on strengthening the longstanding friendly relations between Bangladesh and the Netherlands, with a particular focus on expanding defence cooperation.
The discussions focused on how the Netherlands could provide assistance in enhancing the operational capabilities of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, introducing modern equipment and imparting technical training.
Particular emphasis was placed on potential Dutch cooperation in applying advanced technology to modernize and boost the capabilities of the Bangladesh Navy.
The discussions also highlighted the Netherlands’ longstanding expertise in shipbuilding and explored opportunities for joint cooperation, technical assistance and technology transfer to enable the construction of modern warships and naval vessels at Bangladesh’s domestic shipyards.
The defence adviser appreciated the Netherlands’ interest in supporting the development of Bangladesh’s armed forces and expressed hope that bilateral cooperation in military training, defence technology transfer and broader defence ties would be further strengthened in the future.
