The National Citizen Party (NCP) has alleged that a convoy carrying its Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary came under attack in Benapole market in Jashore today (3 June).
The incident reportedly occurred around 1:15pm while an NCP delegation was returning from a visit to the Sadipur border area.
However, Benapole Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashraf Hossain denied that any such attack took place.
“The allegations made by the NCP leaders are false,” the OC added.
Details regarding the identities of the attackers and the motive behind the alleged attack could not be immediately confirmed.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Khalid Saifullah Jewel, a member of the NCP’s central convening committee, said the delegation, led by Nasiruddin Patwari, visited the Sadipur border area to protest alleged “push-in attempts” at the border.
“Some youth first hurled eggs at the convoy as leaders were getting into their vehicles after the border visit. Later, when two vehicles reached Benapole market, BNP leaders attacked us,” he alleged, adding that four people were injured.
Jewel demanded legal action against those responsible.
According to the party sources, Patwary, the party’s Joint Member Secretary Faridul Haque along with other party leaders safely left for Dhaka, according to party sources.
Meanwhile, Patwary also posted on Facebook a photo showing the broken window of a vehicle in the convoy.
In the post, he wrote, “After news spread about the NCP delegation’s planned visit to the border, Indian authorities removed families who had earlier been pushed in across the border. We visited the area, spoke to local residents and gathered firsthand information about the situation.”
“On our way back, our vehicles came under attack and were vandalised. Four people were injured. However, the rest of us are safe,” Patwary said.
He added that the party’s position on protecting humanitarian dignity, citizens’ rights and Bangladesh’s sovereignty at the border would remain unchanged.
