A man arrested in connection with a murder case was found hanging inside the Detective Branch (DB) office in Bogura this morning (19 July).
The deceased, identified as Asad, 25, was a resident of Sariakandi upazila and one of the prime suspects in the recent murder of CNG auto-rickshaw driver Abdul Mannan.
Confirming the matter, Bogura Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Hosain Mohammad Raihan said police initially believed the death to be a case of suicide.
The exact cause of death would be determined after a post-mortem examination and a legal investigation, he added.
Dr Rashedul Islam Rony, resident medical officer at Mohammad Ali Hospital, said the body bore ligature marks around the neck but no other visible injury marks.
According to DB police, Asad hanged himself using his lungi from a toilet ventilator at the DB office around 10am. He was rushed to the 250-bed Mohammad Ali Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said Asad had been arrested at Bogura Railway Station yesterday (18 July) in connection with the murder of Abdul Mannan.
Mannan’s body was recovered from the Daripara area of Sariakandi on 29 June, while his auto-rickshaw was missing. His family filed a murder case on 1 July.
According to investigators, Asad’s involvement in the killing emerged during the investigation, leading to his arrest. Police claimed he confessed to his role in the crime during interrogation and was scheduled to be produced before a court today.
ASP Raihan said Asad and two others had hired Mannan’s auto-rickshaw from Bogura town and travelled to Sariakandi, where they allegedly killed the driver before fleeing with the vehicle.
Asad later took the stolen auto-rickshaw to a relative’s house in Naogaon, he added.
The ASP further said that after having breakfast this morning, Asad entered the toilet but did not come out for some time. DB personnel became suspicious, broke open the door and found him hanging.
