More than 300 cases have been filed in a single week for violations of traffic laws detected through AI-based surveillance cameras, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
DMP acting commissioner Md Sarwar said that once the system is fully operational, it is expected to generate more than 1,000 cases per day.
He made the remarks after inaugurating a traffic signal light on Airport Road in the capital’s Uttara today (11 May).
Sarwar said the initiative has been introduced to modernise Dhaka city.
“Vehicles crossing signals or driving in the wrong direction will automatically result in digital cases, and offenders will be able to view video evidence of their violations”, he said.
He further said the system is not intended as a punitive measure but aims to restore discipline on the roads.
He added that traffic signal lights have currently been installed at eight locations in the capital, with plans to expand the system to around 30 points.
