Police have arrested a former Jubo Dal leader in connection with the attack, vandalism and looting at Radda MCH-FP Centre in the capital’s Mirpur-1, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to 16.
Nur Alam, the former joint general secretary of Shah Ali thana Jubo Dal, was arrested from the Darus Salam area last night (1 October).
Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
Police had earlier arrested 15 people in connection with the attack and recovered various looted items from them.
The Jubo Dal, the official youth wing of the ruling BNP, expelled Nur Alam from all its posts on 30 September over allegations of involvement in activities violating party discipline.
Police have also said their investigation found information linking local BNP and affiliated organisation leaders and activists to the attack.
“Investigation is under way to identify those involved in the incident. Everyone whose name comes up during the investigation will be arrested and brought under the law,” said DC Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar.
“Efforts are also underway to identify and arrest those behind the attack,” he added.
On 25 September, more than 200 people allegedly attacked, vandalised and looted the private NGO-run clinic, Radda MCH-FP Centre. Later, an excavator was used to demolish several structures at the health centre.
Following allegations of police inaction during the attack, Shah Ali Police Station’s then officer-in-charge Jahangir Alam was withdrawn.
On 30 September, the Dhaka North BNP committee was dissolved after allegations emerged of political involvement in the incident. The local Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal committees were also dissolved, while several leaders and activists were expelled.
Ferdousi Ahmed Misty, a reserved-seat lawmaker, also resigned yesterday (October 1) after allegations of involvement in the incident emerged.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, however, said the investigation into the allegations against her would continue.
