A microbus carrying Indian cannabis plunged into a pond while fleeing a police chase in Brahmanbaria’s Kasba upazila this morning (28 August).
The incident occurred in the Khidirpur area under Binauti union.
Police later recovered nine sacks of cannabis after pulling the microbus out of the pond with a crane in the afternoon, confirmed Kasba Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ali Mohammad Rashed.
According to police and locals, a police team conducted a drive on the Sayedabad–Nayanpur Road in the morning following a tip-off.
During the drive, a microbus attempted to flee after ignoring a police signal.
As police chased the vehicle, its driver lost control in Khidirpur and crashed into a roadside pond.
The sacks of cannabis inside the vehicle subsequently floated to the surface, prompting police to recover them.
OC Mohammad Rashed said the suspected smugglers managed to swim ashore and flee the scene, evading arrest.
He said the exact quantity of cannabis contained in the nine sacks could not be determined immediately.
Legal proceedings over the incident are underway, the OC added.
