The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a special bulletin advising all maritime ports — Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra — to keep Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 hoisted as severe cyclonic storm ‘Arnab’ intensifies over the west-central Bay and adjoining areas.
Early this morning (27 October), ‘Arnab’ moved west-north-westwards and strengthened into a very severe cyclonic storm.
The storm was positioned around 990 km south-west of Chattogram, 945 km south-west of Cox’s Bazar, and 865 km south of both Mongla and Payra.
Maximum sustained winds within 64 km of the storm’s centre have reached approximately 118 km/h, with gusts of up to 150 km/h, prompting warnings of very high seas in affected marine zones.
The authorities have urged all fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay to stay close to the coast and proceed with utmost caution until further notice due to the rapidly deteriorating sea conditions.
The cyclone is projected to move further towards the Andhra Pradesh coast, potentially increasing risks to coastal activities and navigation.
Government agencies, local authorities and maritime personnel are closely monitoring the development of Cyclone ‘Arnab’, preparing to act swiftly as necessary and advising the public to remain vigilant and follow further official updates.
