A youth was allegedly taken from his home, tortured overnight, and killed in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj.
He was reportedly called out of his house around 12am in the early hours today (20 April). This morning, he was found on the riverbank in the Balurchar area in a critical condition and died shortly after being rescued.
The deceased was identified as Rakib, 22, son of Alamgir Hossain from Shimulia village in Gazaria upazila.
According to his family, members of the Nayon-Piyas group were responsible for his death.
Family members said Rakib previously had ties with the Nayon-Piyas group, but about one and a half years ago, they moved from Shimulia to the Bausia union.
Rakib’s mother, Rumi Begum, said three men arrived at their rented house in a car around midnight and asked to take her son to meet Piyas. She said she objected, but they claimed to know him and told her she could take photos of them if she wished. They also said Rakib would be brought back home after the meeting.
However, Rakib did not return that night, and his mobile phone was switched off.
She said that this morning, while they were on their way to Piyas’s house in Jamalpur village under Guagachia union, they learned that a young man had been left on the riverbank in the Balurchar area. Around 5am, they found Rakib there in a critical condition.
He was then taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Gazaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hasan Ali said the victim worked at a local factory and had been taken away by three youths the previous night. He said the matter is under investigation and legal steps are underway.
Dr Solaiman Sujon, an emergency department physician at Gazaria Upazila Health Complex, said there were no sharp weapon injuries or major wounds on the body. He said initial signs suggest possible strangulation, but the exact cause of death will be confirmed after a post-mortem.
Attempts to contact the accused group were unsuccessful as their mobile phones were unreachable.
