Forest officials in Chattogram have arrested a suspected member of an international wildlife trafficking network after recovering 13 parakeet chicks during a raid in Fatikchhari.
The arrest was made yesterday (20 April) in the Suabil area following a tip-off. The accused, Mohammad Raihan, 23, was sent to court today after a case was filed against him.
Confirming the development, Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Officer Dipanwita Bhattacharjee said the suspect admitted during initial questioning that he was involved in an international bird trafficking network.
He also confessed to working with an individual named Helal, who is allegedly linked to cross-border wildlife smuggling, she added.
Officials said the recovery included 11 rose-ringed parakeet chicks and two red-breasted parakeet chicks, both protected species.
According to the Bangladesh Forest Department, the drive was carried out by officers posing as buyers to apprehend the suspect.
Authorities said keeping such wildlife in possession is a punishable and non-bailable offence under Section 41(3) of the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act 2026.
