Police have arrested three students of Rajshahi Nursing College for allegedly beating a man to death with cricket stumps after suspecting him of theft inside the college hostel.
The deceased, identified as Rakibul Hasan Rocky, 32, was a resident of Karigarpara in the city’s Hetem Khan area. Family members said he worked as a water pipeline repair technician.
The incident took place inside the Rajshahi Nursing College hostel yesterday evening (18 June), confirmed Rajpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam Azad.
The arrested students – Atik, Soeb and Fahim – are all fourth-year students of the college. Police detained them from the hostel during a raid around noon today.
According to police, several students detained Rocky on suspicion of theft yesterday evening and allegedly assaulted him with cricket stumps. He sustained severe injuries to different parts of his body.
Rocky was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital at around 8:15pm, where doctors declared him dead.
OC Azad said the victim’s sister filed a murder case against unidentified persons.
“Based on CCTV footage, we arrested three students. Several other unidentified individuals were also involved in the incident, and efforts are underway to arrest them,” he said.
He added that an autopsy had been completed and the body was handed over to the victim’s family for burial.
