Police have arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly attempting to rape a 26-year-old garment worker after taking her to a wooded area beside the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar.
The incident took place near a mini zoo in the C&B area of Savar around 6:30pm yesterday (5 October), said police.
The arrested man is Aminul Islam, son of the late Babu Sheikh of Ulipur upazila in Kurigram. He lives in the Joynabari area of Hemayetpur and works as a hawker, according to police.
Savar Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Mostakim Billah told The Business Standard that the woman had left home after an argument with her sister and was walking towards the house of an acquaintance in Savar through the C&B area.
Aminul allegedly followed her after noticing that she was alone. When she reached the area near the mini zoo, he allegedly covered her mouth from behind and took her into the woods beside the highway, where he attempted to rape her by force.
The police officer said a person on patrol in the area heard sounds coming from the wooded area and alerted the police.
The officer then went to the area with a torch and began searching with the mini zoo’s guards. Police said Aminul tried to flee after noticing the torchlight and was arrested while attempting to escape.
The woman was also rescued from the area, the police official said.
A case was filed with Savar Model Police Station later that night. Aminul was shown arrested in the case and sent to court this morning, the police officer added.
