A legal notice has been served to Kushtia-3 (Sadar) lawmaker and Jamaat leader Amir Hamza over allegations of making defamatory and offensive remarks about Kishoreganj-4 MP and freedom fighter Fazlur Rahman. The notice asks him to provide a satisfactory explanation within 10 days.
The notice was sent by Kushtia court lawyer Nurul Islam yesterday (23 April) on behalf of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti Kushtia district unit member secretary Aiyash Iman. Confirming the matter, the lawyer said the notice demands a response within the stipulated time; failing to respond will result in further legal action.
According to sources, the notice stems from a 26-second viral video circulating on Facebook. In the clip, MP Amir Hamza is allegedly heard making derogatory remarks about Fazlur Rahman, suggesting he should be sent to a mental hospital in Pabna and making other offensive comments.
The legal notice states that Amir Hamza repeatedly made defamatory statements in public and on social media, targeting the freedom fighter. Referring to a sitting MP as “mentally unstable” and suggesting institutionalisation, along with other remarks, have tarnished Fazlur Rahman’s dignity and caused social, psychological, and financial harm, reads the notice.
Speaking on the issue, youth leader Aiyash Iman said Fazlur Rahman is a respected freedom fighter, and such remarks are unacceptable, which prompted the legal action.
The notice also mentions that similar legal notices have previously been served to Amir Hamza over various issues. A legal notice was served seeking to know the identities of individuals allegedly offering bribes related to the closure of Kushtia Medical College, and another over controversial remarks claiming that large sums of money are required to secure the post of Kushtia deputy commissioner.
In a separate development, a court in Sirajganj has issued an arrest warrant against Amir Hamza in a defamation case after he allegedly described State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmood Tuku as an atheist and anti-Islamist during a discussion at a mosque in Kushtia.
