Labour minister inspects working women’s hostel in Kalurghat

Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury today (2 October) said the government is giving the highest priority to the safety and welfare of working women.

He made the remarks while inspecting the ‘Working Women’s Hostel and Labour Welfare Centre’ in Kalurghat Industrial area this morning. During the visit, he toured the hostel and the welfare centre, which includes a five-bed hospital.

The minister said all relevant stakeholders will coordinate to quickly make the ‘Women’s Hostel and Labour Welfare Centre’ in the Kalurghat Industrial area operational.

He said about two lakh workers are employed in Kalurghat, and a significant share of them are women. The facility, he said, will play an important role in addressing their challenges, including safety, accommodation, and medical services.

The government has invested hundreds of crores of taka in the facility, but it has not yet been made operational for various reasons. A decision on the building’s future, and on how it can best serve working women, will be made after reviewing all legal and technical aspects, he said.
 
To that end, the government will seek a coordinated decision through discussions with the mayor, the local MP, and other relevant parties, he added. 

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Labour and Employment Ministry Secretary Md. Abdur Rahman Tarafder, officials of the Labour Welfare Organization, representatives of the contractor Sena Kalyan Sangstha, administrative officials, and local political leaders were present on the occasion.
