A Dhaka court today (9 September) placed three more accused on five days’ remand and sent two others to jail in a case over the killing of Special Branch (SB) sub-inspector Md Altaf Hossain, who was allegedly beaten to death in Savar’s Aminbazar on 5 September.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Tamanna passed the orders following separate petitions filed by police.
The three placed on remand are Rakib Mia, Sabbir Ahmed and Wasim, while Kashem Ali and Dadi Al Fayed Jit were sent to jail.
The five were produced before the court today. Investigation Officer SI Md Zakir Al Ahsan of Aminbazar Police Camp under Savar Model Police Station sought 10 days’ remand for the three accused.
Prosecution Sub-Inspector Abu Bakkar Siddiq said lawyers for Rakib and Wasim sought cancellation of their remand and bail, while Sabbir had no lawyer. The prosecution sought remand for all three.
Yesterday, the court placed Md Alauddin, 29, Md Apon, 26, Md Jihad, 23, Imran Hossain, 25, Nur Mohammad Rudra, 24, and Md Golam Rabbi, 22, on five days’ remand. Billal, 34, and Delwar, 33, were placed on three days’ remand.
The court had earlier placed prime accused Jahurul, 32, on five days’ remand on 7 September.
According to the case statement, an argument broke out around 7:30pm on 5 September over the parking of an auto-rickshaw in front of an auto garage in Bordebi Westpara, Savar.
Altaf intervened to stop the argument but was attacked by the accused, according to the complaint.
He then took shelter at his son Ariful Islam’s business establishment, Grand Fashion. Around 8:10pm, the accused allegedly went there armed with local weapons and attacked him.
The accused allegedly beat Altaf with rods, pipes, hammers and sticks, leaving him critically injured. When his son came to his rescue, the attackers allegedly hacked him with sharp weapons.
The attackers also vandalised the business, causing damage worth Tk5 lakh, and allegedly stole Tk2.2 lakh from the cash box, according to the case statement.
The injured were later taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Altaf dead. His son was admitted in critical condition.
Altaf’s wife, Mst Shyuli Parvin, filed the murder case with Savar Police Station.
Fifteen people have been named as accused in the case.
