A Dhaka court today (28 April) placed the driver and caretaker of Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, former defence adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, on a fresh three-day remand in connection with the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud during the 2024 July Uprising.
The accused are driver Md Mahidul Islam, 42, and caretaker Md Chan Mia, 46.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after police sought a five-day remand. The court granted three days of remand for each.
Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq confirmed the matter.
Earlier, the accused were produced before the court after completing a previous four-day remand. The investigating officer, Inspector Md Amjad Hossain Talukder of the Detective Branch of Police (Ramna zone), submitted the fresh remand petition.
Police arrested Mahidul Islam from Thakurgaon and Chan Mia from the capital’s Bhashantek area on 19 April. They were first placed on a four-day remand on 20 April, followed by another four-day remand on 24 April.
According to case documents, Abdul Wadud was shot dead on the afternoon of 19 July 2024 in the Nilkhet area under New Market Police Station during an anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Following the incident, the victim’s brother-in-law Abdur Rob filed a murder case on 21 August, naming around 130 accused, including Sheikh Hasina and former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader.
