A Jubo Dal activist was hacked to death in Sylhet’s Gowainghat upazila today (11 October), with his companion alleging that the attackers tried to rob them of Tk30 lakh.
The victim, Badrul Alam, son of late Tazzammul Ali of Hadarpar village, was attacked near Goragram Mosque in Rustampur union in the morning.
Badrul’s companion, Sadek Hossain, said they were returning home from Monortol Bazar late yesterday carrying Tk30 lakh. When they reached the Goragram area in the morning, several people allegedly stopped them and tried to take their money, mobile phones and other belongings.
He claimed the attackers assaulted them with locally made sharp weapons, including machetes and knives, after they resisted. Badrul died at the scene, while Sadek survived.
Sadek named six people as allegedly involved in the attack: Shahinur Rahman, 29; Mamun Ahmed, 34; Aminur Rashid, 32; Tuhin Ahmed, 25; and Suhin Ahmed, 23, all from Goragram village; and Noman Ahmed, son of Abdus Shahid alias Shahid Dar of Upargram village.
However, Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Omar Faruk Moral said police had received no written complaint and that he had not heard of the alleged attempt to rob Tk30 lakh.
The OC said police were working to identify and arrest those involved based on information provided by Sadek. The accused could not be reached for comment.
After receiving the news, police visited the scene. Local residents later recovered Badrul’s body and sent it to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The OC said police were conducting an operation to apprehend those involved.
He added that Badrul had previously held a post in the Rustampur union unit of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal but was not currently on any Jubo Dal committee.
Badrul was involved in local business, he said.
