Jahangirnagar University (JU) has temporarily expelled eight students over allegations of ragging first-year students from the Department of Physics.
The decision was announced today (21 July) in an office order signed by Acting Registrar Dr ABM Azizur Rahman. The expelled students are Md Fazle Hasan Fahad, Md Al-Amin Hossain, Md Tanvir Hasan, Md Faisal Ahmed, Md Mahmudul Hasan Khan Abir, Md Mahmud Amin Siam, Md Moshfikur Rahman and Syed Sakib Ahmed Rafu. All eight are students of the Department of Physics’ 54th batch (academic session 2024–25).
According to the order, several students from the department’s 54th batch (academic session 2024-25) allegedly took freshers from the 55th batch (2025-26 session) to a room beside the university’s old arts building between 10pm on 20 July and 1am on 21 July.
The accused students allegedly subjected the freshers to mental harassment and intimidation during the three-hour period. The incident came to the attention of the university administration after details were shared on social media.
The university said the accused violated Section 5(6) of the Jahangirnagar University Students’ Discipline Ordinance-2018.
As a result, the administration decided to temporarily expel the eight students under Section 4(1)(b) of the ordinance pending further proceedings.
