Professor Dr Shamima Sultana of Jahangirnagar University’s (JU) Bangla department has been appointed a member of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC).
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification today (25 October) announcing her appointment under the authority of the president. The notification was signed by Al-Bashirul Islam, senior assistant secretary of the ministry’s Contract and Foreign Employment Wing.
According to the notification, the president appointed Shamima Sultana in the public interest under Article 138(1) of the Constitution, subject to her relinquishing any other profession, business or employment with any government, semi-government or private institution or organisation.
Under Article 139(1) of the Constitution, she will serve as a PSC member for five years from the date she assumes office or until she reaches the age of 65, whichever occurs first.
In an immediate reaction, Shamima Sultana told The Business Standard over the phone that she was grateful to the authorities for placing their trust in her for such an important state position.
“I will make every effort to discharge my responsibilities with honesty and dedication, upholding the transparency and impartiality of the BPSC to ensure that merit and competence are properly assessed,” she said.
Shamima Sultana drew attention during the 2024 student-led movement against discrimination for expressing strong support for students and taking a principled stand.
She also came into the spotlight after removing a photograph of then prime minister Sheikh Hasina from her departmental office.
