The government has withdrawn AKM Anisur Rahman, a member (joint secretary) of the Mongla Port Authority, from his post and attached him to the Ministry of Public Administration following allegations of neglect surrounding the death of his elderly mother.
The Public Administration Ministry issued a notification today (3 June) directing Anisur Rahman to join the ministry immediately.
The order stated that he must be released from his current workplace and report to his new posting on the same day, failing which he would be deemed “stand released.”
The move came after media reports highlighted the circumstances surrounding the death of 75-year-old Noor Jahan Begum, whose body was recovered from a flat in Dhaka’s Mirpur area.
Noor Jahan Begum’s children include Anisur Rahman, another son who teaches at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), and a daughter who works at a local school.
Following widespread public reaction to the incident, the Ministry of Public Administration initiated steps to take action against the joint secretary.
Earlier in the day, State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari said the matter would be examined under the Parents’ Maintenance Act.
A legal notice has also been served on the four children of Noor Jahan Begum, seeking written explanations over allegations of neglect, irresponsibility, failure to provide maintenance and breach of legal duties.
