Bangladesh Bank Governor Mostaqur Rahman today (12 June) responded to allegations that he was once a loan defaulter, saying he has refrained from commenting on the issue and believes regulators should speak sparingly.
“It is better for regulators to speak less,” the governor said while answering questions from journalists at the post-budget press conference for FY2026-27 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka.
The issue was raised by a journalist during a discussion on liquidity challenges in the banking sector.
Responding to the allegation, Mostaqur said the matter had been discussed in various ways over the years, but he had chosen not to comment publicly.
He explained that he had been associated with a green factory project that continued operating without interruption despite financial difficulties.
“It was a green factory with which I was involved. The factory never remained closed for a single day, exports were never halted, workers’ salaries were never delayed for a month, and the company never sought a waiver of even a single taka of its loans,” he said.
According to him, the project had initially secured bank financing at a 4% interest rate. However, after around Tk150 crore had been invested, the lending bank informed the company that the concessional fund had been exhausted, forcing it to borrow at interest rates of 11% to 12%.
“As a result, there was a delay in loan repayment. The company has already repaid Tk100 crore of the loan,” he added.
