I stood against injustice, but now I am branded a criminal: Ivy 

Former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy today (28 July) said that despite being innocent, she is being treated as a criminal.

“I am innocent, yet treated as a criminal. All my life, I have stood against injustice, murder, tyranny, and oppression. Yet today, I am the one branded an offender,” she told journalists outside a local court. 

Earlier, she appeared in court in connection with a case involving an alleged attack on police during her arrest last year. 

She attended the proceedings at 11am before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Nurul Huda Chowdhury, confirmed her lawyer, Awlad Hossain. 

Following her brief statement, she left the premises for her home.

A crowd of political supporters and party activists had gathered outside the court ahead of her appearance, prompting a heavy security deployment by law enforcement agencies to maintain order.

Awlad said police vehicles came under attack on the day of Ivy’s arrest last year. 

The court had scheduled today to receive the charge sheet filed by Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station, he added.

Although Ivy has already been granted bail in the case, she attended in line with required judicial procedures.

Ivy was arrested at her residence on 9 May last year in connection with a murder inquiry. She was subsequently named as an accused in 12 separate cases involving murder and attempted murder.

Following 391 days in custody at Kashimpur Central Women’s Jail in Gazipur, she was granted bail and released on 4 June.
