HC grants bail to ex-MP Mozammel in July Uprising murder case

The High Court has granted bail to BM Mozammel Haque, former Shariatpur-1 lawmaker and Awami League organising secretary, in a case filed over the killing of garment worker Rubel in Dhaka’s Adbar during the July Uprising.

The High Court bench of Justice KM Imrul Kayes and Justice Sagir Hossain passed the order today (10 September), disposing of a rule issued earlier seeking an explanation as to why he should not be granted bail in the case.

However, lawyers said Mozammel will not be able to walk out of jail immediately as he is facing several other cases.

Advocate Md Liton Mia represented Mozammel in court, while Assistant Attorney General Jasim Uddin opposed the bail on behalf of the state.

Mozammel was sent to jail in October 2025 in the case over the killing of Rubel, a garment worker, during the July Uprising in Adabar. He was previously arrested in Dhaka’s Niketan area. Eight cases have been filed against him at different police stations over allegations of attacks.

According to the case statement, on the day the Awami League government fell, several hundred students and members of the public, including Rubel, brought out a protest procession in the Ring Road area of Adabar.

At that time, police and leaders and activists of the Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Sramik League, Krishak League and Matsyajibi League allegedly opened fire on the protesters.

Rubel sustained gunshot injuries during the incident. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Rubel’s father, Rafiqul Islam, later filed the murder case with Adabar Police Station.
