The government has made the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices mandatory for obtaining and renewing fitness certificates for public transport vehicles as part of efforts to make the country’s road transport system safer, more modern and technology-driven.
According to a recent gazette notification, the requirement will come into effect on 1 August 2026 and will apply to all categories of public transport vehicles. Operators will also be required to keep GPS devices active while vehicles are in service.
Officials concerned said GPS technology will enable authorities to monitor the real-time location, speed and routes of public transport vehicles more effectively.
They said the system would help curb reckless driving, reduce accidents, facilitate vehicle tracking and strengthen crime prevention efforts.
