The government is working to increase the allowance provided to migrant workers who return home from abroad, State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Haque Nur said today (12 August).
“Returning workers’ experience should be utilised to improve their skills, while ensuring their social security,” he said at a consultation meeting held at Hotel Holiday Inn in Tejgaon to finalise the National Action Plan on Labour Migration 2026.
The state minister said the interests of expatriate Bangladeshis and returnee migrant workers must be given the highest priority, regardless of political affiliations.
Nur also called on all relevant ministries and agencies to work together to support returnee migrant workers.
He said efforts were underway to increase the allowance provided to returnee workers through the Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL).
The state minister said labour migration plays an important role in employment, foreign remittances and the country’s economy. However, Bangladesh’s migration sector faces several challenges, including high migration costs, skills shortages, limited overseas job markets and inadequate support for the rehabilitation of workers returning from abroad.
A draft National Action Plan on Labour Migration 2026 has been prepared to improve labour migration management. The consultation meeting was organised to gather feedback and recommendations from stakeholders before finalising the plan.
