The government is set to fast-track the Bay Terminal project in Chattogram, aiming to modernise Bangladesh’s maritime infrastructure and support growing export-import demand, Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam said.
Speaking to journalists after visiting the project site today (18 April), the minister said the government has reached preliminary understandings with several international port operators to implement the long-delayed project.
“The project has significant potential, as reflected in international studies. That is why leading global operators are showing interest,” he said.
The Bay Terminal project will be developed in three sections. Singapore-based PSA International is expected to develop the first terminal, while an initial understanding has been reached with DP World for the second. A Saudi-based company has also expressed interest in building the third terminal.
Separately, development work is progressing in the Laldia area, where AP Moller-Maersk is involved in related terminal activities.
The minister said improving port capacity is essential for diversifying exports beyond garments, adding that the government is prioritising the project with a focus on long-term economic benefits.
“We are assessing all proposals based on national interest, including financial implications and long-term gains,” he said, noting that discussions with investors are ongoing
