Govt asks DCs to probe artificial LPG shortage, overcharging

The government has directed district administrations to investigate whether artificial shortages of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are being created in any part of the country to sell the fuel at inflated prices.

Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood gave the instruction during an online meeting with deputy commissioners at the Secretariat today (30 September).

The minister said there is no shortage of LPG supply in the country, but artificial shortages may be being created in some areas to charge consumers higher prices.

He asked deputy commissioners to submit reports with information and evidence on why shortages are being reported despite adequate supply and whether consumers are being charged above the price fixed by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).

The government will hold meetings with importers and other stakeholders after receiving the reports from the DCs and take necessary measures, the minister said.

Steps will also be taken to increase supply in areas where shortages are found, he added.

The minister warned that action would be taken against those found creating artificial shortages or charging consumers above the BERC-fixed price.

He also instructed district administrations to remain vigilant and closely monitor LPG supply to ensure normal distribution across the country.
