The government has appointed 86 deputy attorney generals (DAGs) and 179 assistant attorney generals (AAGs) to represent the state before the Supreme Court, cancelling all previous appointments.
The decision was announced in separate notifications issued by the Solicitor Wing of the Law and Justice Division today (30 July). The newly appointed law officers will serve until further orders.
The Attorney General’s Office has seen a series of changes since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August 2024.
On 8 August, senior Supreme Court lawyer Md Asaduzzaman was appointed attorney general.
On 13 August, the government appointed Muhammad Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan, Mohammad Arshadur Rouf and Mohammad Aneek Rushd Haque as additional attorneys general.
On 28 August, the government appointed 66 deputy attorney generals and 161 assistant attorney generals.
Following the 13th parliamentary election, 18 law officers – identified as Jamaat-backed – resigned from the Attorney General’s Office on 23 June. They included seven deputy attorney generals and 11 assistant attorney generals.
The resigning law officers said they stepped down in protest over the non-implementation of the July Charter, the state’s opposition to establishing a separate secretariat for the judiciary and the repeal of the ordinance on appointing Supreme Court judges.
According to the Attorney General’s Office website, before the latest appointments there were 93 deputy attorney generals and 213 assistant attorney generals serving in the office.
The current Attorney General, Ruhul Quddus Kazal, is a member of the BNP’s National Executive Committee and a three-time secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
