The government has set a target of increasing the contribution of the tourism sector to 6–7% of Bangladesh’s GDP, up from the current 3%, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam has said.
Speaking today (4 May) while addressing the first session of the second day of the Deputy Commissioners’ Conference at Osmani Memorial Auditorium, the minister said the BNP-led government remains committed to implementing its election manifesto at the earliest possible time, expressing hope that DCs would play an active role in advancing development work at the field level.
“At present, the tourism sector contributes only 3% to the country’s GDP. We want to raise this to 6–7%,” she said.
The minister said Bangladesh currently has 1,742 tourist spots across the country, with attractions located in every district.
“We are formulating a master plan for the development of the country’s tourism sector. By utilising your skills and expertise, we will be able to move the sector forward, Inshallah,” she added.
She also drew the attention of Culture Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury to the need for developing Baliati Palace and Teota Zamindar Bari to attract more tourists.
