The West Zone Power Distribution Company Ltd (WZPDCL) has sought police assistance to strengthen security at its power installations and substations in Gopalganj amid frequent load-shedding, with the municipality experiencing outages of up to 8-10 hours a day.
In a letter signed by Md Main Uddin, executive engineer of the WZPDCL Gopalganj electricity supply division yesterday (11 August), the company requested the superintendent of police to take measures to prevent possible untoward incidents and sabotage.
According to the letter, electricity is supplied to the municipal area through the WZPDCL powerhouse campus in Gopalganj and two 33/11kV substations in Charpathalia.
The company said frequent load-shedding has become necessary as power generation has declined and the allocation from the national grid remains below demand.
The situation has reportedly fuelled dissatisfaction and anger among consumers, raising concerns that staff, offices and electrical installations could face unwanted behaviour or other untoward incidents.
To prevent possible sabotage and ensure security, WZPDCL requested that its offices and 33/11kV substations be brought under regular police patrols and that the law and order situation be monitored closely.
Copies of the letter were sent to the deputy commissioner, the joint director of the National Security Intelligence (NSI), the officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station and other relevant offices.
