The flood situation in seven districts of the country’s south-eastern and north-eastern regions has worsened due to continuous heavy rain, upstream water and landslides, leaving 51 people dead so far.
At least 39 others have been injured in floods and related incidents.
A total of 1,022,963 people have been affected by the disaster, while members of 267,918 families remain marooned. Some 44,457 people have taken shelter in relief centres.
The information was disclosed in a report published by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief on the flood situation. The ministry released the updated figures as of 12:30pm today (12 July).
According to the ministry, 58 upazilas, 386 unions and 11 municipalities in seven districts — Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Moulvibazar and Habiganj — have been inundated by the floods. A total of 1,131 shelters have been opened for the affected people.
Cox’s Bazar has reported the highest number of deaths, with 28 people killed, including 15 residents and 13 Rohingya people.
The district also reported 24 injuries, while one person remains missing. Besides, 13 people have died in Chattogram, six in Bandarban, three in Rangamati and one in Moulvibazar.
Chattogram has seen the highest number of affected people. Around 595,000 people in 16 upazilas of the district have been affected by the floods, while nearly 147,500 families remain marooned. In Cox’s Bazar, more than 158,000 people have been affected.
The ministry said relief activities are continuing in the flood-hit areas. So far, Tk1.75 crore in cash and 3,250 metric tonnes of rice have been allocated for the seven flood-affected districts.
Besides, Tk4.60 crore and 8,950 metric tonnes of rice have been allocated for all 64 districts so that assistance can be provided quickly when needed.
The ministry said district administrations, local administrations and other government agencies are jointly carrying out rescue and relief operations.
Dry food, rice, cash assistance and other emergency relief materials are being distributed in the affected areas, it added.
