A sudden fire damaged the internal server of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, disrupting internet services and damaging a large number of official documents, though officials said there was no cause for concern as all files are backed up.
The fire broke out around 4am on Monday (7 September) at the old Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) office building inside the project site near Gate No 2, reports told The Daily Star.
Md Abul Hasem, station officer of the Rooppur Plant Fire Station told The Daily Star that firefighters rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control, but the plant’s internal server was damaged.
The fire was initially suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit in an air conditioner, while an internal probe committee is reviewing CCTV footage and other sources to determine the cause, Hasem said.
Md Ruhul Kuddus, in-charge of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant site office, said some documents were damaged, but backup copies were available, while server damage had disrupted internal internet services, with restoration work underway.
