Faridpur District Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested three alleged members of a robbery gang, including two dismissed members of the army and police.
The three were arrested last night (3 November), police said. A Yamaha motorcycle was recovered from them, and police found records of around a dozen cases against the trio at different police stations across the country.
The gang was involved in robberies and snatchings, posing as members of different law enforcement agencies, police said.
According to police, the gang recently snatched a new battery-run three-wheeler by posing as DB officers and pretending to hire the vehicle.
Following the incident, DB police arrested the gang’s alleged key figure, dismissed police member Limon Mia, 34, and his associate Sakhawat Munshi, alias Saka, 36. Limon is from Nandaha village and Saka from Kandapara village, both under Muksudpur Police Station in Gopalganj.
During interrogation, Limon admitted that they had long been stealing and snatching battery-run three-wheelers from different parts of the country by posing as DB officers and using various tactics.
The arrestees sold the vehicles to a man named Montu Mia in Muksudpur, police said.
According to Criminal Database Management System (CDMS) records, Limon faces at least 11 cases involving theft, snatching, arms and drugs at different police stations, including Kotwali and Boalmari in Faridpur, Pangsha in Rajbari, Madaripur Sadar and Shyampur under Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Following up on the case, a DB team raided the Raghunandanpur area of Faridpur town and arrested Imdadul Hoque, better known as Jahangir, 55, a dismissed army member. He is from Labanchara in Khulna and was living as a tenant at the house of Mazed Mia in Raghunandanpur.
On 12 June, Police recovered from his possession a Yamaha 150cc motorcycle stolen during a robbery at Nipun Synthetic Leather Industry in Rupganj, Narayanganj.
Jahangir admitted that he and his associates had looted goods worth Tk64 lakh from the factory, including Tk24 lakh in cash.
He also said they had been committing robberies and stealing motorcycles in different parts of the country before selling them in Faridpur and neighbouring districts.
CDMS checks found at least five cases against him at Shyampur and Gandaria police stations under DMP and Rajbari Sadar and Pangsha police stations, including one under the Explosives Act.
Faridpur Superintendent of Police Shahariar Mohammad Miazi said a large criminal network was linked to the gang.
The arrested men were produced before the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court, where police sought their remand to facilitate the investigation, arrest other members of the gang, and recover more stolen goods.
