Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam has announced a zero-tolerance policy against harassment and illegal financial transactions in the issuance and renewal of trade licences.
DSCC Revenue Department official Mostafa Nuruddin Ahmed has been relieved of his duties following allegations of harassing traders and collecting money in connection with trade licence renewals.
He has also been asked to explain in writing within three working days why administrative and legal action should not be taken against him under existing laws.
Mostafa was serving as licence and advertisement supervisor of the Miscellaneous Collection Branch under the Revenue Department’s Zone-4.
The action followed a discussion organised jointly by DSCC and the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) on Sunday (16 August) on local business and trade, law and order, traffic congestion and improving trade licence services.
DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam attended the meeting as chief guest. The corporation’s chief executive officer, senior revenue officials, DCCI representatives and leaders of different business associations were also present.
During the meeting, Moulvibazar Business Association President Mohammad Ali Bhutto alleged that Mostafa had collected cash from traders during an on-the-spot trade licence renewal camp held on 23 and 24 June, promising to renew 22 trade licences for the 2025-26 financial year.
However, more than one and a half months later, the licences had not been renewed, while the supervisor allegedly continued to delay the matter when contacted by phone, according to the complaint.
After hearing the allegation, the DSCC administrator immediately ordered action against the official.
Following a preliminary assessment in which the allegation was found to have merit, Mostafa was relieved of his duties on the administrator’s instructions.
DSCC Chief Revenue Officer Jonaed Kabir Sohag said the corporation would maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards irregularities, corruption and harassment in citizen and business services.
He said further legal action would be taken against the official after his written response to the show-cause notice is received.
