Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will install 11,000 CCTV cameras across the capital to curb crime, acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar said today (23 April).
“Of these, 700 cameras will be set up in Mohammadpur to prevent juvenile gang activity, violence and snatching,” he said at the inauguration of a temporary police camp in Basila and an open house event at Mohammadpur Police Station.
He said work to install 700 government-funded CCTV cameras in the Basila area will begin soon.
“Around 1,300 CCTV cameras are already installed in Gulshan and Banani, and crime has decreased in those areas,” he said.
Addressing Basila residents, he urged them to install CCTV cameras around their homes.
“We will install cameras at different points where needed,” he said, adding that a proposal to install 11,000 cameras across Dhaka will be approved soon. He said the project would make the capital safer.
He said another police outpost will be set up in Mohammadpur due to higher crime in the area.
Additional police have already been deployed at the newly inaugurated outpost, he said.
“Extra ADCs, ACs and patrol inspectors have been assigned to 50 police stations across the capital,” he added.
He said police have a list of criminals in Basila and Mohammadpur and will analyse it to identify those living beyond legal income sources.
“We will examine their activities and take action if necessary,” he said.
He also urged residents to avoid using auto-rickshaws, citing their role in facilitating crime in the area.
He said photos of identified criminals will be published soon and urged the public to assist law enforcement.
“Inform us confidentially about offenders and you will be rewarded,” he said.
Responding to a question about reduced police presence in Geneva Camp, he said steps are being taken to strengthen security in the area and intelligence activities have been increased.
“RAB, DB and police are working there, and efforts have been intensified to arrest offenders,” he said.
He added that juvenile gang members are involved in crimes using sharp weapons and will be identified and brought under the law.
“Bringing criminals to justice is a challenge we have taken on,” he said.
