Dhaka South City Corporation has announced that animal waste generated on the first day of Eid-ul-Adha will be removed within eight hours as part of its extensive cleanliness drive for the festival.
The announcement came at a press briefing held at the National Eidgah today (25 May), where Dhaka South outlined preparations for the main Eid congregation and waste management operations.
According to a press release by Public Relations Department, the main Eid-ul-Adha congregation at the National Eidgah will be held at 7:30am, while an alternative congregation will take place at 8am at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in case of bad weather.
According to Dhaka South, around 35,000 people will be able to offer prayers at the Eidgah, which has arrangements for 121 rows. Separate facilities for women, including entry points and ablution areas, have also been arranged.
The city corporation said waste transportation to the Matuail landfill will officially begin from the Kalabagan STS at 1:30pm on Eid day, with a target to complete removal of the first day’s waste by 9:30pm.
Dhaka South estimates that around 33,942 tonnes of waste will be generated in the southern part of the capital over three days of Eid celebrations.
To manage the operation, 13,453 personnel and 2,117 vehicles and equipment, including trucks, compactors and pay-loaders, will be deployed.
The city corporation will also distribute 46 tonnes of bleaching powder, 210 gallons of Savlon and 140,000 biodegradable bags across its 75 wards.
A central control room will monitor cattle market operations and waste removal activities round the clock, while separate monitoring teams, executive magistrates and medical teams will remain deployed at each cattle market.
Dhaka South also urged residents to dispose of animal waste at designated locations and avoid dumping waste into drains or sewers.
