A crude bomb exploded in front of the Prime Minister’s Office on Agargaon Link Road in the capital’s Tejgaon Police Station area early today (10 October), while another was later defused, with the police searching for two people involved.
The incident took place at around 1:15am when the two suspects arrived on a motorcycle, stayed at the scene for two to three minutes while observing the surroundings, and then threw two crude bombs before fleeing.
One exploded, while the other remained unexploded.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Bomb Disposal Unit later recovered the unexploded device and detonated it to neutralise it.
DMP Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Md Ibn Mizan confirmed the incident at around 2:30am after visiting the scene. He said police received information that the suspects fled towards Kafrul Road via Agargaon.
Police teams began working immediately after the incident.
Investigators are collecting CCTV footage from nearby cameras to identify the suspects.
They could not collect all the footage immediately as shops and other establishments were closed at the time.
Police said they will collect the recordings once the establishments open in the morning and proceed with the investigation.
DC Mizan said the Bomb Disposal Unit found no shrapnel or harmful materials in the unexploded device. According to him, it was similar to a firecracker.
Asked about security arrangements in a sensitive area such as the PMO, he said the suspects avoided the main road and used the link road to carry out the explosion and flee. As security arrangements were focused on the main road, they had taken an alternative route, he added.
He stated that police are treating the incident with the utmost importance and working to identify and arrest those involved.
