A Dhaka court today (20 July) ordered that former member of parliament from Bhola-4, Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, be shown arrested in an attempted murder case in connection with the July Uprising in the Mirpur Model Police Station area of the capital involving Md Rifat Hossain.
The order was passed by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam after hearing an application submitted by police.
Earlier, the investigating officer in the case, Sub-Inspector Md Ashraful Doula of Mirpur Model Police Station, petitioned the court to have Jakob shown arrested in the case.
According to the application, activists affiliated with the Awami League allegedly attacked participants in the anti-discrimination student-led movement and opened indiscriminate fire.
The complainant, Md Rifat Hossain, sustained a gunshot wound above his right knee during the incident.
The application further stated that Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, an active member of the banned Awami League, should be shown arrested in the case to facilitate a proper investigation.
The court granted the request.
Rifat underwent treatment for nearly a month before doctors surgically removed the bullet from his leg.
Earlier, Jakob was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the Gulshan area of Dhaka on 1 October 2024.
He has remained in custody since then.
