The court convicted the former officials of criminal breach of trust, forgery and embezzlement in connection with a fraudulent overdraft loan obtained using forged share certificates.

A Dhaka court today (6 August) sent former Gazipur-5 Member of Parliament Akhtaruzzaman, 73, to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The court also fixed 10 August for hearing the investigation officer’s petition seeking a seven-day remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order after a hearing.
Sub-Inspector Arif Reza of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Prosecution Division confirmed the matter. He said the remand hearing could not be held as the original case records were unavailable. The court therefore ordered the accused to be sent to jail and scheduled the remand hearing for Monday.
Detectives of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) arrested Akhtaruzzaman from a residence in Gulshan on the night of 5 August.
The investigation officer, Inspector Md Masudur Rahman of the Tejgaon Zonal Team, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
According to the remand petition, preliminary questioning and available evidence indicate the accused’s involvement in the case. Investigators said custodial interrogation is necessary to identify and arrest other absconding suspects, gather information about alleged anti-state activities and trace the source of improvised explosive devices allegedly linked to the case.
According to the case statement, on the morning of 18 June, 35 to 40 activists of the banned Awami League and its student wing, the Bangladesh Chhatra League, allegedly led by Nibas Majumdar, brought out a procession near Mohakhali Bus Terminal in the Tejgaon Industrial Area. The complaint alleges they chanted anti-government slogans, detonated crude bombs and carried out activities intended to create public panic, prompting Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station to file the case.
