Police constable Md Al Amin Sardar died today (5 October) after a minibus rammed into his motorcycle while he was chasing suspected robbers in Chattogram city yesterday morning (4 October).
He died at around 4am while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chattogram Medical College Hospital, according to Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).
Al Amin sustained severe injuries to his head and both legs and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
The accident occurred around 6am in front of the western gate of Jameatul Falah Mosque on the GEC-Lalkhan Bazar road.
According to the police and case statement, a Chattogram Metro-Kha-11-0231 minibus travelling from Wasa intersection towards Lalkhan Bazar at high speed and in a reckless manner struck Al Amin’s motorcycle in front of the mosque.
The impact dragged Al Amin and his motorcycle for around 50 to 100 feet, leaving him with severe bleeding injuries to his head and both legs. The government motorcycle was also extensively damaged.
Police personnel and local residents rescued him and rushed him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors admitted him to the ICU in critical condition.
Police, with assistance from local residents, later seized the minibus and arrested its driver Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, 38, and helper Joy Das, 30.
Sub-Inspector Md Hiron Mia. in-charge of the Tigerpass Police Box, later filed a case with Kotwali Police Station under the Road Transport Act. Five people, including bus owner Mohammad Asaduzzaman, were named as accused.
The case accuses the driver of causing damage to life and property by driving at excessive and reckless speed and of causing serious injury through reckless or negligent driving.
Md Iqbal Hossain, investigating officer of Kotwali Police Station, told TBS that the constable was injured while pursuing suspected robbers. “Police filed a case over the incident and two people have been arrested,” he said. He added that Al Amin was undergoing treatment in the ICU of Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
