The shutdown at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) entered its third consecutive day today (24 September), as students continued protesting for the reinstatement of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem.
Students held a human chain at the university’s Central Shaheed Minar premises from 10am, with participants from different departments joining the programme.
Debajit Das Gupta, a fourth-year Civil Engineering student, said Sayem was highly respected by students as a teacher and vice-chancellor.
“Our movement and demand will continue until Sir Sayem is reappointed as vice-chancellor. We have only one demand- we want Sayem Sir back as vice-chancellor,” he said.
The students also continued a mass signature campaign that began yesterday.
As part of their announced programme, they are scheduled to hold a torch procession on campus at 6:30pm today.
On 21 September, the Ministry of Education issued a notification removing Professor Dr Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem as Cuet vice-chancellor and appointing Professor Dr Sheikh Shariful Alam to the post.
Students protested on campus that night. The following day, 22 September, they began an all-out shutdown, halting classes, examinations and other academic activities.
The students said the movement would continue until Professor Sayem is reinstated as vice-chancellor.
