A college student died after undergoing an appendicitis operation at a private hospital in Faridpur on Friday (17 July), with her family alleging medical negligence.
A three-member probe committee has been formed by the district health authorities into the matter, the Faridpur Civil Surgeon Dr Mahmudul Hasan confirmed.
“The committee has already begun its investigation. If negligence or dereliction of duty by anyone is found, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with health department regulations,” he said.
The deceased, 17-year-old Ayesha Afrin, was the daughter of expatriate Liton Matubbar of Kailasher Dangi village in Akoter Char union under Sadarpur upazila. She was a Class XII student at Faridpur Government Yasin College.
According to victim’s family members, Ayesha was taken to Al Zara Private Hospital, located opposite Faridpur Medical College Hospital, on Thursday (16 July) afternoon after developing severe abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with appendicitis and admitted around 9pm. An operation was performed at about 10:30pm.
Her relatives alleged that Ayesha’s condition deteriorated rapidly after the surgery. Around 3am, she was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Rezwan Molla Hospital in Tepakhola area of the town, where she died at around 8:30am on Friday while undergoing treatment.
Her mother, Aleya Begum, claimed that medical negligence led to her daughter’s death.
“I took my daughter to the hospital in good health for an appendicitis operation. I lost my daughter because of the doctor’s mistake,” she said.
The deceased’s mother demanded a proper investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
The family members further alleged that the surgery was performed by Dr Atikul Ahsan, assistant professor of the Surgery Department at Faridpur Medical College Hospital and a surgery specialist. They claimed he has not been available since the incident.
Repeated attempts to contact him by mobile phone for comment were unsuccessful.
Hospital authorities denied the allegations of negligence.
Meanwhile, the news of Ayesha’s death triggered protests by her relatives on the hospital premises. An altercation also took place between the protesters and hospital authorities before the situation was brought under control with the intervention of local people.
