Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said the BNP embodies the July Charter at its core, rejecting claims that the party is denying or distancing itself from it.
“Many are saying the BNP is denying the July Charter, but the BNP carries the July Charter in its veins. The BNP will comply with the July Charter letter by letter,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a newly constructed building of the Jashore District Bar Association today (24 April).
Addressing concerns over the charter, the Human Rights Commission, judicial independence and the proposed law for a judicial secretariat, the minister said each issue will be thoroughly reviewed before being placed in parliament in the form of bills.
“We want to make it clear that every law will be scrutinised and brought to parliament as a bill,” he added.
However, the minister also questioned the legal standing of the July National Charter Implementation Order, saying it lacks a constitutional and legal basis. “After 1973, the president no longer holds the authority to issue such directives,” he said.
Highlighting the government’s stance on judicial reforms, he said efforts are underway to uproot corruption from the judiciary.
Referring to past examples, he added, “Judicial independence is being discussed, with references to figures like Masdar Hossain. But we do not want to build a judiciary tainted by corruption like that.”
